The Acquest is a high performance spectrometer designed by LGL Biosystems specifically for ultra-high throughput screening (UHTS) and assay detection well-suited for drug discovery research. High throughput and accuracy are essential to increasing cost efficiency of drug discovery in research and pharmaceutical testing. Such high throughput is achieved with the ability of this instrument to read 1536-well microplates quickly and as accurately as less dense microplates. Although all reading times are reliant on the detection mode and reagents used, the Acquest is capable of reading 1536-well plates in less than six minutes.

In addition to an ability to quickly screen a large amount of samples, an optics system based on SmartOptics hardware gives the instrument a wide range of detection modes and accuracy. This range of detection modes includes fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, time-resolved fluorescence, and luminescence. Each of these four modes allow for the accurate reading of picomolar volumes. This precision is achieved by measurements taken from both the top and bottom of each plate, improving signal to noise ratios. This flexible optical system is based on three-axis positioning, making it capable of adjusting in the vertical axis so as to optimize light collection and avoid signal contamination from neighboring wells. In order to detect signals in each well, the optical system automatically detects the liquid volume within each well space.
